By Katrina Roddenberry Welcome to our blog that will follow the adventures of nine teachers on their expedition to the Arctic's edge. These teachers will travel to Churchill, Canada from various locations across the United States to work alongside leading scientists in conducting field research.
This research focuses on the diverse wetland environments that make up 40% of the land cover in the region. The aquatic organisms in these wetlands differ from those of larger and deeper permanent bodies of water because the wetlands in this region are temporary. A critical difference is that the organisms in Arctic wetlands generally do not have predators such as larger fish and invertebrates that are a significant predatory component in other aquatic systems. The importance of hydroperiod in the wetlands to species compositions during the summer months has been highlighted by continued long term monitoring. We will be donning waist-high neoprene waders to collect data on species and water quality from natural shallow tundra ponds and wetlands as well as participating in the researchers' mesocosm experiments in outdoor stock tanks. We cannot wait to jump into this research! Follow our team of educators as we begin our expedition at the Arctic's edge on June 25, 2019, where we will join scientists in researching and collecting evidence of climate change in this unique ecosystem. We are excited to share this experience with our students, colleagues, and community. We hope to inspire our students and community to value the environment and provide our students with the knowledge and tools to tackle the environmental challenges before them. Join us on our adventures!
